Welcome back to school everyone. It has been fun hearing about the different things that you have been doing over the half term holiday.
This is it - our final half term in year 1! We have lots of fun and exciting things planned for the next few weeks. This half term our topic is going to be 'Wildlife Watch'. 1AP have become part of a special company called 'Ipswich Nature Detectives' and the children are going to be given special missions to complete each week. We made company name badges, binoculars and magnifying glasses to help us with our work in the coming weeks.
Our classroom role play area has turned into a nature area. We have a wildlife hide where we can hide ourselves and use the binoculars to spot wildlife. We also have an investigation area with lots of equipment and information for us to find out more about wildlife around the area.
This week we have been making our own maps of the school. We spent time looking around the school environment and then, in small teams, we built our maps using post-it notes for each room. Afterwards we added things to the outdoor area, including our playground, the Adventure Trail and the wildlife garden.
This week we have been learning how to measure length, weight and capacity. We used rulers to measure length in centimetres, a variety of measuring jugs and cylinders to measure the capacity of different containers in millimetres and balancing scales to measure the weight of a selection of objects from around our classroom.
1AP are winners of the attendance bell for the second week in a row. Fantastic! Keep up the good work everyone.
This half term our topic is 'World Explorer'and already the children have been learning so much about different parts of the world.
We started our topic by learning all about the United Kingdom (UK). We learnt the names of the four countries which make up the UK and looked at different locations such as the seaside, the countryside, London and the Lake District.
We moved on to learning about Australia. We found out about the Great Barrier Reef, the Australian outback and Aboriginal art and had lots of fun creating our own pieces of art to display in the classroom.
Thank you so much for all the cards, flowers, gifts and kind words I had on Friday - it was very kind of you all. I am a very lucky teacher!
I'm going to miss teaching you 1AP - you are a fabulous class! Miss Perkins
Fraser in 1CC let his Dad come to school this week! Fraser's Dad is a Police Officer and he talked to us about his job. Then he took us out to his police car and showed us all the different special things it does. He let us put the flashing lights on and even use the siren!
We also had a visit from PC Plum this week and were able to ask him lots of questions about the sorts of jobs Police Officers have to do.
What a busy week!
What a busy week! We have been creating cars for our superhero characters. See if you can spot glitter-girl's car, a fire-mobile, a vehicle covered in ice and some cars that squirt out goo at villains!
Castles are exciting! We built these super castles in teams. We had to decide who was going to make each part of the castle.
Can you spot the...
We worked really well together to make them look so good!
We have been learning so much about Kings and Queens! We found out all about the Battle of Hastings and how William conquered England back in 1066. We learned about the Bayeux Tapestry and how it tells the story of the battle. After that we practised our own stitching skills and sewed a tapestry square with our first initial on it. We are really proud of how brilliant it looks!
A huge thank you to all parents and carers for the fabulous costumes you sent in today! The children looked brilliant and it really helped set the scene for life inside a medieval castle. More photos to follow...
We have been learning about our Queen - Elizabeth the Second. We have found out facts about her and her family, learned about what she does and some of the places she lives. We painted portraits, looking carefully at details on the Queen's face. We drew the details using pencil and then painted very carefully. We added crowns using gold paint and then added sequin jewels. We are very proud of how smart they look in the fancy frames!
We have been learning about the Battle of Hastings! We looked at different sections of the Bayeux Tapestry which tells the story of the battle. We even had a pretend battle! We are making our own tapestry - each person will stitch their own piece and then we will join them together.
Happy New Year 1AP! I hope you're having a lovely holiday and have enjoyed all the exciting times over Christmas and New Year. I'm really looking forward to seeing your learning logs with some more fabulous pictures, facts, stories and things stuck in.
Don't forget we start back on Tuesday and it would be really helpful if you could make sure that there are jogging bottoms in your PE kits this term as we will be doing more outside PE.
PE sessions are moving to a Friday (sorry, I know this is another change of day!)
Well, what a funny few days we've had at school! A funny looking egg appeared in the front entrance and we have been finding out all about what sort of dinosaur might have hatched out...
This week we have been learning about herbivores - can you remember what herbivores eat?
We have had a busy week in 1AP! We have been learning about the story of the Gunpowder plot and talking about our favourite fireworks. We have used cutting skills and different types of tools to paint firework pictures.
In numeracy we have started adding with the numicon. We were really good at it! Now we are starting to use an number line to add, which was a bit trickier but we will keep on practising!
We have also learned about why we have Remembrance Day and why we wear poppies. We have made some super poppies to be part of a school Remembrance display.

We're gone a bit football crazy in 1AP, ready for our World Cup Fortnight starting next Monday! Lots of the children are keen to be football correspondents for the various matches in the group stage and have been bringing in the scores to put on our World Cup Wall display. Thanks to all those parents for helping too!
Here is a place to find the scores if you've missed your match (there are lots of cool facts about Brazil and a quiz as well!)
P.S. 1AP: Please don't try to convince your parents that I said you could stay up past your bed times to watch the football. I did not say that at all! Make sure you go to bed when you have been told to!
Here are some links to websites that will support your child with the upcoming phonics check:
Don't forget our summer reading challenge has started - please support your child by reading with them as often as possible - at least 3 times a week!
In literacy we have read Alice in Wonderland - can you remember some of the fantasy characters in the story?
This week we made our own fantasy settings - with pop up parts! Watch this space for pictures of our books!
Last week in Year 1 we were learning about different habitats - do you know what habitats are?
We learned about some of the different animals that live in rainforests - pictures to follow soon!
In numeracy we are going to keep practising addition and subtraction with a number line.
Let's find out if Mr Parrot, our maths buddy knows how to do that!
