Summer Term One
We are going to begin this term with an author study, looking at Mini Grey and her Traction Man adventure stories. The children will learn about two of the Traction Man stories in depth, enabling them to develop their comprehension, discussion and inference skills. We will retell these stories through active storytelling and role play, story mapping and narrative sequencing, before writing our own versions of a superhero adventure story. After the two week author study, we will then move on to our Magic Garden topic (more information to follow).
Spring Term Two
This term we are 'On Safari' learning about lots of different animals, their habitats and what they eat. The children will have an amazing opportunity to visit Colchester Zoo where they can see some of these animals first hand. We also have our Year 1 school performance this half term, which will be a safari themed twist on the traditional fairy tale, 'The Gingerbread Man'.
Within Maths this term the children will be learning about different measures (weight, length, height, capacity and volume) and time.
World Book Day!!
For World Book Day our children came dressed in their PJ's with a teddy! We read lots of their favourite books in class throughout the day and we also had biscuits as a treat whilst we read together.
Colchester Zoo Trip
Last week we visited Colchester Zoo. The children had a brilliant time and were so excited to see all of the different animals that they have been learning about in class. We saw lions, tigers, penguins and monkeys to name a few. We even got to feed the elephants and giraffes!! Take a look at our pictures below...
Spring Term One
This term our topic is 'Rain, Rain, Go Away' and we will be learning all about different types of weather, the four seasons and the water cycle. First of all the children will focus on the kind of weather we get in UK and then we will move on to learning about the weather within other parts of the world and how it affects us/our planet. Later in the term, the children will also carry out their own experiments to do with water and dress up as scientists for Science week and we will also begin experimenting with colour mixing for Art.
In Maths this half term we will be learning about halving and quartering shapes and amounts, before moving on to weight and capacity next half term.
This half term...
Autumn Term Two
This term we are learning about 'Heroes and Villains'! To begin with we will be looking at real life heroes and villains, such as Florence Nightingale, Mary Seacole and Guy Fawkes and how they are remembered for the good/bad things they have done. Then we will be moving on to looking at heroes and villains in Traditional Fairy Tales, such as Goldilocks and the Three Bears, The Three Little Pigs and Jack and the Beanstalk. We will start by reading through the traditional tales before moving on to alternative versions of the stories so that the children can see the characters in different perspectives. Within these lessons, we will be doing some active storytelling and getting the children to retell the stories in their own words.
In Maths this term we will be beginning to look at 2D shapes and their properties, as well as touching upon time, partitioning of numbers by tens and ones and multiplication/division.
Hands on Maths!
We have been learning how to add and subtract using concrete resources such as multilink cubes, numicon, number lines, lego, toy cars and even playdough!! Math's can be fun when it is hands on.
Autumn Term One
Over the last six weeks, the children have all settled in wonderfully. They have quickly become very independent, learning and adhering to lots of new routines; and they have been working really hard to aspire to be like their Learning Behaviour Buddies.
As a class, we have discussed Growth Mindset, in which the children have learnt about the importance of perseverance and learning from mistakes. We have also talked about Kelso's choices, to encourage the children to be responsible for themselves and make the right behaviour choices. Already, the children are beginning to adopt these attitudes which is fantastic! The children have also come up with some class rules, and held an election to choose their Class Councillors and Eco Representatives.
In Maths, the children are learning number bonds to 10 and 20, addition and subtraction, using a variety of concrete and pictorial resources; and we have recently started our 'Terrific Transport' topic too, in which we are currently making our own hot air balloon models from paper mache.
Please have a look at the pictures below to see what we have been up to.
Thank you very much for your support with reading and practising spellings with your children at home. It is greatly appreciated!
